The Emperor is the complimentary card to the Empress. He represents the Patriarch, or, in other words, all things Masculine. His ruling Planet is Mars as depicted by the four rams heads that decorate his throne; and the element associated with him is Fire. The Emperor personifies Power and Authority.

His stern demeanor is a stark contrast to the sensitive features of the Empress. The Emperor is depicted as a man with long white beard signifying his wisdom and experience that he has accumulated over the years. This means that he is someone whose advice is worth adhering to. The mountains behind his throne speak of intellectual heights, leadership and action.

The orange background and the red attire symbolize the passion and energy which makes up his proactive nature and helps him deal with life and its challenges. The right hand of Emperor holds an Ankh which
symbolizes life according to ancient Egyptian tradition, while the orb in his left hand represents the world over which the Emperor rules.

Upright Position

In a reading the Emperor may suggest achievement and honor. It also signifies a male influence - a person who has a strong position in the life of the seeker - it may be her/his father, male partner or even superior at work. The card says that this male authoritative figure will stand by you in times of need. It also says that
you shall be blessed with authority and leadership qualities.

Reversed Position

In a reverse position this card signifies abuse of power. It says that the person concerned has lack of character leading to failed ambitions and insecurity.
