Chinese New Year History

The origin of the Chinese new year festival can be traced back thousands of years gradually developed through a series of colorful legend and religious ritual. Chinese new year history dates back to 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti first introduced the series of the zodiac sign. According to Emperor Han Wu Di's calendar, it begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the full moon 15 days later. According to the ancient Chinese new year history, in primeval times majority of the Chinese people, lived in an agricultural society and took a break only after the harvest which coincided with the commencement of the lunar new year.

Chronological record of Chinese new year history reverts back to the story of great legend of Nien, a malicious and fierce beast, which the Chinese believe, eats people on the new year's eve.

To keep Nien away, red-paper couplets are pasted on doors, firecrackers are burst throughout the night, because Nien is said to fear the light of fire and loud noises. The term "Guo Nian", which entails "Survive the Nian" is recognized today as the New Year’s Eve, as the word "guo" in Chinese means "passing-over" and commemoration of the event.

History of Chinese new year celebrations is a century old phenomena lasting for several days. It begins on the twenty-fourth day of the twelfth lunar month; the day is believed to be auspicious as various gods ascend on heaven. Marked respects are also paid to Jade Emperor, the supreme Taoist deity. The new year’s eve is usually observed by a lavish spread of dinner and the air is filled with an ambience of warmth and excitement. So, celebrate the rich history of Chinese new year with great funfair and revelry.
