Good Friday is also known as Holy Friday, is the Friday which proceeds the Easter Sunday. In 2024, it will fall on April 19, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar.
There are debates as to whether the day when Jesus was tortured and crucified is really called Good Friday, but according to some sources it really means ,pious or holy and another set of historians claim that — “Good” is really a corruption of the word “God”
Background of Good Friday
According to the Gospels, Jesus was betrayed by Judas during the Last Supper, who sold him for thirty pieces of silver. The next morning Jesus was arrested and brought to the Jewish leader Anna, from where he was sent to the Roman governor of the province Pontius Pilate, who could not find any reason to condemn him. However, even after King Herod found Jesus to be innocent of the crimes accused of, the crowds were enraged, and finally Pontius Pilate literally washed his hands off the matter and Jesus was sentenced to be crucified. Jesus was convicted of falsely claiming himself to be the King of the Jews.
Jesus was tortured, tormented and flogged before being crucified. Crucifixion was a particularly painful method and only the hardened and despicable criminals were accorded this punishment. He carried his cross to Golgotha, the site of execution, and in Latin Calvary. Here he was crucified amidst two criminals. Jesus was on the cross for six long hours, during the last three hours darkness descended on the land of Jerusalem, and the Jesus uttered his last words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” As soon as Jesus gave his spirit up, an earthquake occurred, tombs broke open and the curtain of the temple ripped open from top to bottom. A soldier then pierced the side of Jesus, from which blood and water came out and confirmed his death.
Joseph brought his body down, wrapped it in a clean linen, and Nicodemus brought myrrh and aloes and placed them in the linen with the body and kept Jesus’ body in a tomb and closed the tomb. From here, as he had said, he rose, three days after the crucifixion.
Commemoration of Good Friday
Thus the commemoration of Good Friday is rather subdued in nature keeping in view that Jesus laid down his life to bring about the reparation. The events are often remembered in the stations of cross, a fourteen step devotion which is often carried out by the Catholics during Lent and particularly on Good Friday. It is a day of fasting within the Church and there is no mass on the Good Friday. Under very unusual situations, anointing of the sick, Baptism and penance may be performed on this day. Psalms are read, hymns are sang and the Bible is read on this day. During this period the Church is vested of altar clothes, crosses and candlesticks. Generally according to traditions, no bells are rung on the Good Friday or the Holy Saturday, until it is time for the Easter Vigil. However, the Byzantine Christians or the Orthodox Christians call this the Great Friday and instead of the purple, the clergies wear black. They do not strip the church altar bare, rather use the color black in all things to denote grief.
