In Germany New Year is celebrated with excitement with a tinge of traditional activities. New Year here is celebrated nosily and merrily. People host dinners and parties during New Year's Eve. There is eating, drinking, dancing and singing. This is accompanied by a traditional “Sylvester " custom.
People would drop molten lead into cold water and try to tell the future from the shape it made. A heart or ring shape meanta wedding, a ship a journey, and a pig plenty of food in the year ahead. In Germany people also would leave a bit of every food eaten on New Year's Eve on their plate until after Midnight as a way of ensuring a well-stocked larder.
And as the clock strikes midnight and we bid farewell to the present year and welcome a New Year, glasses are filled with champagne or wine, and toasts are raised. Bells resound all over the land and fireworks fill the sky and people wish each other a Happy New Year!
