The city of colors New York is a grand place to be on New Year. With the approach of the New Year the city gets ready for its annual New Year celebrations in the Times Square. One famous tradition going on from 1906 is the ball drop atop the One Times Square. At just one minute before midnight, a lighted ball drops slowly from the top to the bottom of a pole. People also begin the New Year countdown at the same time as the ball drops.
When it reaches the bottom, the New Year sign is lighted. Each year, thousands of people come to Times Square to experience this free event.
On New Year's Eve the whole of New York takes a holiday look. People dress up in different costumes and celebrate the New Year spirit. Masquerade balls are a very traditional way of celebrating New Year in New York as well as in the whole of US. Guests dress up in different fancy costumes and come to the party. As the clock strikes midnight, guests are unmasked.
Another great New Year activity in New York City is the Central Park midnight marathon. This is a four-mile run through New York City's Central Park that includes a champagne toast, fireworks, and music to ring in the New Year.
Parties start on the evening of the New Year's Eve and go on till next morning. The annual tradition of great fireworks in the Prospect park dazzle the sky filing the night in hues of sparkling navys, ambers, white, gold and other glittering colors. Each of these breathtaking firework shapes chrysanthemums, peonies, weeping willows, salutes and whistles, bringing awes of joys from the spectators from around the world.
All in all New York is one place that comes alive in its true sense during New Year.
