New Year in Spain

New Year celebrations in Spain are special and unique. A holiday mood sets in as the New Year's Eve approaches. A special fiesta packed with noise and happiness rings in the air.

Spanish people believe in a very deep rooted and old tradition that they follow on New Year's Eve. As the clock strikes midnight the Spanish eat twelve grapes one by one to bring good luck and prosperity for the twelve months for the New Year.

Sometimes these grapes are washed down with wine.

Dinner in Spain is generally with friends and family. People like to be around their TV sets as the countdown is telecasted live all over the country. New Year's Eve parties are hosted in many hotels and restaurants with the cuisine consisting of traditional grape recipes and other delicious goodies.

The center of the New Year celebrations is the ringing of the bells at midnight. The clock in Puerta del Sol Square in Madrid is one place where thousands of people get together on New Year's Eve to ring the bell.

And as the clock strikes 12, the streets take on a festive look overrun by confetti, streamers and music. The night life becomes a world of light, parties, decorations and fun. All in all Spain wears its fun hat and rejoices in the New Year.
