History of Irish calendar has a Celtic origin which is particularly evident in the naming of the months. According to the mediaeval Irish and Welsh calendars the first part of the year started at Samhain, which was the first of November. The second part of the year

started at Beltaine which was around the time of first week of May. The literary record suggests that the tribal kingdoms of Heathen Ireland adopted fixed dates on their lunisolar calendar for the public celebration of certain festivals, done in prehistoric times. But under Christianity the Julian system was used to reinterpret the Irish calendar according to the Biblical history.
Irish new year calendar begins with the festival of Samhain marking the beginning of a whole new cycle, literally meaning “summer's end.” In Ireland, Samhain marks the first day of winter, when the herdsmen leads the cattle and sheep down from their summer hillside pastures to the shelter of stable and byre. As Celtic year ends, ancient tradition tells that the Gods draw near to earth on the first day of the year.
Each of the Irish months are named accordingly as--
beginning with January as Eanáir, February as Feabhra, March as Márta, April as Aibreán, May as Bealtaine, June – Meitheamh, July – Iúil, August – Lúnasa, September - Meán Fómhair, October - Deireadh Fómhair, November - Samhain or Mí na Samhna and December as Nollaig.
