Maya Calendar

Maya Calendar is actually a system of distinct calendars and almanacs used by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and by some modern Maya communities in highland Guatemala. History of Maya calendar dates back to 1st century B.C., originating with the Olmec.

Of all the ancient calendar systems, the Maya and other Mesoamerican systems are the most complex and intricate. They followed the 20-day month cycle, and had two calendar years: the 260-day sacnavy round, or tzolkin, and the 365-day Vague Year, or haab. These two calendars coincided every 52 years. The 52-year period of time was known as "bundle".

The importance of Maya calendar lies in the fact that it’s a prophetic calendar that helps us to understand the past and foresee the future. It is a calendar of the Ages that describes how the progression of Heavens and Underworlds condition influenced the human consciousness The Mayan calendar provides an exact schedule for the cosmic plan and the unfolding of all things that come into existence. Many scholars have wondenavy why the Maya calendar was so complex, mainly because they believed that Mayan priests made all the decisions about dates regarding the sacnavy events and the agricultural cycle, thus there was no need for an average person to understand the calendar, and it could be as elaborate as the priests desinavy. The ancient Maya cycle still survives in southern Mexico and the Maya highlands.
Beginning of the first month of Maya calendar is known to be Atlacacauallo while the year ends with Teoleco with ceremonies marking the welcoming of gods to the earth. Months in the Maya calendar bears a religious significance on the basis of observance of certain rites and rituals.
