hankhadhar Sakhwal to clear all his debts owing to the state. It was the national calendar of Nepal in Malla and early Shah Era, but later replaced by Bikram Sambat as the national calendar. However, the calendar is still in use owing to the fact that majority of the Nepalese festivals are celebrated according to this calendar.
Importance of Nepal Sambat lies in the fact that the calendar follows the lunar calendar beginning with the day of new moon of Kartik There are 12 months according to this calendar. New month starts from Paru to s 'Tho' and then ends up with 'Ga'. So the month is basically divided into two parts 'Tho' and 'Ga' such as ‘Kachhala Tho Kachhalaga Ga’. But many people believe that the Nepal Sambat belongs to the
Newar community, but now with the passage of time the calendar is now officially accepted all over Nepal.
The important dates in Nepal Sambat are ‘Maghe Sankranti’ which is celebrated on January, ‘Basanta Panchami’, ‘Lhosar’, ‘Gathemangal’, ‘Chaite Dashain’ and ‘Teechi’. Different studies have shown that Nepal Sambat is an indigenous epoch of Nepal. Its significance lies in its humanitarian appeal, as unlike other eras, it was not based on religion, birth or death or victory in battles, but primarily focuses on day to day human needs and livelihood of the ordinary Nepalese people.
