The people in Egypt regarded the feast of Opet as the main event on New Year. This New Years Event was believed to take place on the first day of the New Year. The people in Egypt considenavy it to be just the right time to celebrate the festival of New Year. The reason is because the people were unable to work as the river Nile got flooded. It was then they felt open to take part in the New Year celebrations.

The custom of seeing the new crescent moon before the making of the official announcement is an important New Year custom that the people in Egypt follow. The Muhammed Ali mosque is situated in Cairo at the top of a hill. The people in Egypt visit this mosque to offer prayers. The people in Egypt first wish each other and then their families. The New Year dinner is an essential part of the celebrations in Egypt. The custom of serving meat is followed by the poorest of families in Egypt on New Year. Custom has it that the wide populaces in Egypt do not have alcohol on New Year. So this is not even served as a drink on New Year in Egypt.

Wearing new clothes and dressing up in colorful dresses are a part of the customs followed in Egypt. Giving gifts in various shapes are an important part of the New Year customs in Egypt. The children receive New Year gifts like sweets, which they are fond of. The boys receive a sweet that is in the shape of a boy on horseback. Girls receive gifts shaped in the form of a girl wearing a dress. These gifts are wrapped in colorful papers to make them look attractive.

The adults regard the New Year to be a special day for paying visits to friends. One can find the father or the head of the family in certain villages in Egypt wishing each other by going from house to house. This is done and continues till many people are collected.
