New Year Customs In Mexico

People in Mexico celebrate New Year with great fun and joy. It was traditionally though that one would affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year by what they did or ate on the first day of the New Year. It is therefore very essential to celebrate New Year in the company of family and friends. After the ringing of the New Year parties often are seen lasting into the night of the New Year in Mexico.

The people in Mexico believe in the New Year custom of eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, each grape signifying one month of the upcoming year. This is a New Year custom that is followed in Mexico for good luck. If the grape for the respective month is sweet the people in Mexico believe it to be a good month and if it’s sour a bad month is expected.

The New Year is celebrated on Jan 1st. The people in Mexico have masquerade balls, where guests dress up in costumes and cover their faces with masks. It is an old New Year custom in Mexico that the people unmask themselves at midnight. Partying and watching television are the important New Year customs followed by the people in Mexico on New Year.

The television channels on New Year in Mexico show Times Square that is in the heart of the New York City. Just a minute left for the midnight then a ball drops slowly from the top to the bottom of a pole on one of the buildings. The people are seen counting down how many times the ball drops. The New Year sign is lighted when the ball reaches the bottom. People then hug and kiss and wish each other.
