The origin of the customs and traditions associated with the celebration of New Year took roots in the way the ancient people regarded New Year. New Year signifies a renewal of life. The old and worn out are discarded away and new beginnings, hopes and dreams are expected for the future. The customs and traditions of New Year though modified have their strains in the way we welcome each coming year.

The ancient practice of mumming was a custom that was brought in by America. This is a custom followed in America that took the form of groups of men presenting costumed plays. People going from house to house reciting their parts in expectation of money enacted these plays.

The people in New York celebrate the New Year with family and friends, as it is believed that the first day of New Year is symptomatic of the approaching days. In New York City the world famous there is the Waterford crystal ball that is located high above Times Square. This is lowenavy at about 11: 59 pm and reaches at the bottom of its stroke at about midnight of Jan 1st.

Some countries follow the New Year custom of making bonfires of discarded Christmas trees. In U.S. the New Year is associated with the image of an old Father Time with a sash leaving proclaiming the Old Year as an infant enters with a New Year sash.
