Just like the New Year customs that are followed in various other countries the people in Portugal follow the custom of eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight on the New Year's Eve. This custom is followed as the clock strikes 12 at midnight. It is believed that following this custom would ensure 12 happy months for the coming year.
In the northern parts of the country one can find children going from one house to another caroling. This is another New Year that the wide populaces in Portugal follow on New Year. The children in turn receive treats and coins. Janeiro's that are old songs are usually sung by the children in Portugal on New Year. This is a custom that is followed, as it is believed to bring good luck for the people in Portugal on New Year.
