The Russians regard the New Year as a time of great festivities and celebrations. In the ancient times the people in Russia on New Year decorated their houses with pine boughs. The New Year in Russia is a time of fun and fervor. Today more and more people in Russia are trying to restore the New Year customs and follow them. The New Year symbols and New Year customs can be seen in most Russian homes even to this day in Russia.



Novogodnaya Yolka is called the New Year’s tree in Russia. The New Year’s tree is beautifully decorated with tinsel and sweets on New Year in Russia. The Russians regard decorating the New Year tree as an important New Year custom to be followed on New Year. The New Year tree is always a center of attention for all the people in Russia on New Year.

Ded Moroz called the old man frost and Snegurochka who is his grand daughter snow girl are believed to bring New Year presents and put them under the New Year tree on New Year. It is a custom that the children in order to recieve the presents on New Year from the old man frost should sing him a song or read a poem. If the song or poem is liked by him the better presents the children would get for New Year.

The olivie salad consisting of meat, potatoes, pickles, green peas, onion, carrots, and mayonnaise is the most important food that the people in Russia enjoy having on New Year. Among drinks the champagne is the most famous drink taken by the peoploe in Russia on New Year. Fireworks play and important role in the customs of the people of Russia on New Year.

Exchanging New Year gifts, cards and celebrating the New Year with parties are a part of the New Year customs in Russia. New Year gifts are exchanged with friends and relatives as a New Year custom in Russia. At the end of the New Year celebrations the people in Russia thank god for all the good he has done in the past year by saying an intimate wish hoping the coming year will be a fantastic one for them.
