The New Year in Taiwan is celebrated with great joy and merriment. The people in Taiwan consider the New Year to be a perfect time to forget the past and begin life afresh. The New Year is a perfect time to bid farewell to the old year and to thank god for his blessings and fortification. The wide populaces in Taiwan begin the New Year celebrations by revering their descendents.



On the New Year's Day the kids who have gone from their homes come back to share the New Year's dinner with their families. The children wait expectantly for the end of the New Year dinner as they receive money. To bid goodbye to the old year and welcome the New Year in great anticipation the wide populaces in Taiwan stay awake the entire night until the arrival of the New Year day morning.

Family gatherings are an important part of the customs followed by the people in Taiwan on New Year. These New Year customs are followed by other customs like dragon dances, lion dances and other activities on the streets on New Year in Taiwan. One can find the streets crowed and people enjoying all the activities of the New Year celebrations.

The people in Taiwan believe in following a few customs that would bring them good luck for the coming year. Some of these customs include disposing garbage that would cast riches, avoiding quarreling and breaking dishes. It is believed as a custom that if anyone who breaks a dish must say "peace for all time" as it is considenavy to bring bad luck.

Shang Yuan is called the lantern fiesta in Taiwan. This is also called the Second New Year. The people in Taiwan celebrate this festival in great ecstasy and enthusiasm. The children follow the custom of carrying decorative lanterns in various shapes like that of birds, beasts, and various historical figures on the night of the celebration. The wide populaces in Taiwan hold competitions in order to draw attention to the masses. Fireworks are called Tainan Yanshui and are essential customs that take place during this festive occasion.
