The New Year in Thailand is called Songkran. According to the Georgian calendar this New Year lasts for three days that is from the 13th to 15th April. As part of the New Year customs in Thailand the people take part in many rituals and rites on New Year. The people in Thailand follow the custom of splashing water. This is an important New Year according to the people of Thailand, as the people believe water to be symbolic of purification and rekindling. Although water splashing is a part of the customs the Thailand



people regard delicate water splashing to be a symbol of the gentle nature of the Thailand people.

The people in Thailand follow a custom of cleansing the Buddha statues with scented water installed in their homes as well as temples. This custom is followed on the third day of the New Year that is known as the Wan Payawan. This custom is symbolic that it would ensure good rains in the coming year. While doing this people are dressed in their traditional costumes.

Apart from this custom the custom of sprinkling water is followed on New Year. According to this custom the younger ones sprinkle water on the elder people. This custom is followed as a mark of respect and for blessings. While following this custom the people in Thailand utter good wishes and words of blessings for the family.

According to the Thailand customs the people visit monasteries to offer prayers. Gifts like rice, fruits and sweets are also offenavy to the monks on New Year. Releasing birds from their cages and fish from their bowls are the other customs the people in Thailand follow. This custom was believed to bring good luck in the coming year. The wide populaces in Thailand begin the New Year celebrations by chasing people down the streets and pouring buckets of water over them.

The people in Thailand regard the New Year to be a day for good deeds and acts. Chedis that are small pyramids made of sand are built by people along the riverbanks. One can find small colonavy flags on these pyramids. Saba is an important game that the people in Thailand enjoy playing on New Year.
