Ukraine has got a wide variety of cultures. Since Ukraine is situated geographically between Europe and Asia it has got a lot of Eastern and Western influences. The customs in Ukraine have ancient roots and some of them are followed even to this day.Singing and dancing are a part of the customs in Ukraine on New Year. Music is a famous custom and has come a long

way. Polissia magic pop and Kolomiya rap tend to be most popular. Traditional dances and dance games form the crucial part of the New Year customs in Ukraine.

According to the Julian calendar Malanka is a Ukrainian folk holiday that is celebrated on January 13th. This is also the New Year's Eve. Malanka is celebrated as the feast day of Saint Melania. It is believed that on the night of the New Year's Eve the carolers playing pranks or acting out small plays went from house to house leading the troop with a bachelor dressed in women's clothing.

The people in Ukraine on New Year's Eve begin the celebrations by having a ''Holy Supper". The New Year in Ukraine marks the beginning of the naming of Jesus at his Circumcision. "Kutya" which is boiled wheat, sweetened with raisins and containing poppyseeds is the traditional New Year food that is relished by the people of Ukraine on New Year. This New Year traditional food is a symbol of joy for the New Year. Meatless dishes are also served on New Year in Ukraine.

The people in Ukraine follow the custom of throwing rice at people on New Year. This is believed to bring good wishes to the people on New Year. Yet another custom followed is throwing a spoon full of Kutya at the ceiling of the house.

The people in Ukraine believed that if the amount of boiled wheat and poppyseed that remains stuck to the ceiling is more then it would be an indication that the New Year is sure to be a happy one.
