During this festival, people dress themselves in bizarre costumes made of rags and tatters, picked up objects and second hand materials. The Jonkonnu members wear masks on their faces and there heads are covered with beautiful headdress made from animal parts.
Food is an integral part of the New Year traditions at Jamaica. The people of the country have Oyster Shells, Legumes and Smocked Salmons on the New Year eve. This food brings good luck to them.
Every New Year tradition in Jamaica has a special significance. The New Year eve’s party is accompanied by loud noise including the dissonance of sirens, church bells, party horns and firework lightings. The loud noises made during the new year’ eve is believed to drive away the evil spirit. The Jamaicans also believes that whatever they performed on the first day of the year would be reflected on the other days of the year.
