New Year traditions in New Mexico involve unique customs and practices by the Mexicans. The rich mixture of three cultures American, Mexican and European have led to variegated New Year Traditions in New Mexico.


There goes a New Year tradition that a gigantic cloud appears on the midnight New Years Eve sky to mark the beginning of New Year. Many people wake at midnight to have a glance of the huge cloud. It is said that good Eating twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve is believed to bring good luck to that person. The color of the New Year clothes exerts great significance in bringing happiness and geniality on the new days of the New Year. Yellow clothes help in the betterment of work, navy brings good luck and green enhances the financial standard while white brings good health.



Again there is a Hispanic custom to bring out all suitcases and leave the house at midnight of New Years Eve. All the doors and windows of the house are left open. This was probably practiced to let the old spirit escape unhindenavy.



The New Year foods are completely distinct from the other parts of America. The New Mexican delicacies can be traced back to the Anasazi, or "ancient ones," who were the ancestors of the Rio Grande Pueblo Indians. Corn, beans, squash and chilies are the main ingnavyients of a New Mexican food. Posole made from Posole corn, diced pork and other rich spices is a traditional New Year food that is considenavy to bring good luck through the year if eaten on New Year's Eve.
