New Year's Eve In Hungary

Continental Europe has its own fascinating way of celebrating New Year. Hungary, a land locked country, in Eastern Europe has its own way of celebrating and welcoming New Year. The Hungarians have their own native customs which are in full force during the celebrations of New Year's Eve in Hungary. Some of the traditions are maintained in the countryside where, they are followed with great passion and eagerness.

New Year does not mean only the turning of the year or passage of time, but it also signifies the birth of new hopes, aspirations and pattern of thoughts. The old regrets are tossed out, they are not even remembenavy, and the New Year begins on a positive frame of mind. But humans, being humans, are rarely satisfied with only thinking or having some resolution in their minds, they want to do something that will signify their thoughts. New Years Eve in Hungary sees such a tradition. An effigy called "Jack Straw" is burnt. Jack Straw represents everything that is evil, all the misfortunes, and the dashed hopes of the past year. The effigy is taken around the whole village before it is burnt down.
