“Guro Devo Bhava” is believed and followed in India. This means “teacher is God”. In an ancient nation like this, teachers are thought to be foundation. Ancient India had the Gurukul System. This was the school that trained royal kids and others in various arts of warfare and other arts. Teachers were treasured gifts to the society then. The belief has been carried out through the years. Initially, there was no fix date to honor them. With the birthday celebration of famous teacher and philosopher Dr Sarvepalli Radhakhrishnan, Teachers Day in India came into being. He became the President of India in the year 1962. He was also a celebrated writer and contributed his works in subjects like sociology, ethics, philosophy, culture, theology and education. As the story goes, it was Dr S Radhakhrishnan’s birthday and his students wanted to celebrate it. On this he said that “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teacher’s Day”. From that day onwards, 5th September is celebrated as Teachers Day.
Teachers and their Importance
Teachers are the foundation behind any student’s success. What we learn is from them. They are not only found in schools, colleges and other educational institution but also at your home. As education begins at home, your parents are the first teachers you have. You may have your grandfather, your tuition sir or madam, your caretaker or your dear sibling as your mentor. On teachers day you can let that person know that you are grateful for the knowledge and will always be so. Honor them the way you want to this year.
