New Year's Customs

Customs are a habitual group pattern of behavior that is transmitted from one generation to another. Customs are a practice followed by people of a particular group or region. Customs generally have ancient traditions and are a way of expressing oneself. The people usually follow the customs on certain occasions like the Christmas and New Year. As the old year goes by the people wait in great anticipation for the New Year. The most important New Year customs that are followed are making New Year resolutions.

The modern New Year resolutions include losing weight and to quit smoking.This custom of making New Year resolutions first began in Babylonia when they first took a resolution on New Year for returning borrowed farm equipment. The New Year resolutions as a custom are usually made, as it is believed that on New Year one should take up new and good habits and leave all the bad habits of the previous year.Making lots of noise to scare away evil spirits is another New Year custom. This custom along with the custom of lighting fireworks is followed even to this day. Partying and feasting are an essential part of the New Year customs.
