Tarot Cards (Major Arcana) – Fool

This card is ruled by Planet Uranus and has Air element. This card does not have a specific position in the sequence of Major Arcana Tarot Cards. As such, it does not even have a specific number assigned to it either. Some assign it the number 0 and place it in the beginning, while others call it XXII and place it at the end. As such, this card is thought to have unlimited potential.

In fact the Major Arcana is often considered as the journey of the Fool through all the phases of life. This way it is considered that he is ever present and therefore he does not need a specific number assigned to him.

The card shows the fool with the sun rising behind him. It represents the beginning of the journey. The fool is facing the north-west - the direction that is associated with the unknown. The fool looks upwards towards the sky - towards the Spirit. He is about to step off the cliff to descend to the material world. He has all the tools required in a bag, but he was not opened the bag yet.

The white rose in his left hand, the hand that represents the subconscious, represents purity and innocence. The little white dog is his companion in the journey who will push him to learn the lessons of life. The mountains behind him represent the domain of spirituality that he is ready to leave but would spend his whole life trying to regain it.

Upright Position: In a reading, this card speaks about approaching the unknown or embarking upon a journey that is yet unplanned. It also indicates that worries and burdens will be eradicated. The subject has an open mind and an adventurous heart.

Reversed Position: Reversed, the card symbolizes recklessness and a suspicious and fearful nature. Some readers also opine that it suggests that the subject is prone to exaggeration.

Minor Arcana – Five Batons

The Five of Wands card shows five men - each of them with a wand in their hands. The men are wearing different colored clothes implying the various and varied backgrounds that they come from.

The men are moving their wand erratically with sheer disregard for each other. The men appear to be in direct conflict with each other. This is also a sign of fierce competition.

However, when observed closely, it would be noticed that the wands have only been raised to strike - they are not striking anyone in reality. This implies that the chaos that has been created may not intend to harm anyone. The element associated with this card is Fire.

Upright Position: In a reading this card generally talks about conflicts and challenges. It may also indicate strong competition. The card suggests that the seeker may have to go through a series of contests, struggle and contention. However, competition and contention are not always bad. For example in a group brainstorming session they may lead to innovative ideas that may in turn lead to success. The lesson predominantly is the fact that competition has to be faced to achieve success. It teaches to work to thrive in all kinds of environments. The card also indicates adaptability - an enthusiastic approach and open mind towards change.

Reversed Position: When reversed, the card can indicate that the subject is probably walking away from an opportunity for the fear of struggle and competition. It may also bring the news of dispute, opposition and litigation. However, if the seeker is persistent and enduring, success would follow.

Minor Arcana – Five Swords

The Five of Swords card shows a man standing near an ocean looking at two retreating male figures with an expression of contempt on his face.

There are clouds in the blue sky above him and also an indication of wind which is evident from the man’s blowing hair. The man seems to have been collecting swords. There are two swords placed over his left shoulder, and he is holding a third one with his right hand.

Before him on the ground there are two more swords. It seems that this man has been triumphant over the two retreating ones and has managed to take these from them. The two men seem to be going away with a feeling of sadness and loss that is evident from their hunched strides.

Upright Position: The card signifies two things – triumph and conflict. It probably means that the subject will be victorious, but only after a phase of hard work. The card also suggests that though the subject thinks that the intentions are honorable, she/he is probably blinded by self centered intentions, and lacks compassion and empathy towards others. Depending upon the background of the seeker, the card may even indicate abuse.

Reversed Position: Reversed, the card does not hold the opposite meaning. However, in this case, the victim perhaps is the subject her/himself. It suggests that the person has got entangled in a conflict or is being unable to walk away from an unwanted event or memory from the past. An old wound may reopen and the seeker may find residual resentment remaining in her/his soul.

Minor Arcana – Five Cups

The Five of Cups card depicts a man in a black cloak standing seemingly in despair. The man hides his face in the cloak which expresses his anxiety.

There are five cups at the feet of the man. Three of them have fallen down on the ground and their contents have spilled out. The other two remain standing. The man does not pay much heed to the two standing cups. All his focus seems to be on the fallen ones.

Ahead of him there is a river that flows to separate him from a castle at a distance. The castle is probably his home and the scene depicts that he is separated from the comfort and security of his own home. The card signifies challenging times where dealing with losses is a high probability.

However, the standing cups signify hope and suggest that the man should turn his focus from the spilled cups that depict his loss to the standing ones that would help him rebuild what he has lost.

Upright Position: The card is generally considered to depict a loss. It also may indicate conflicts and challenges. However, the card also teaches to appreciate what remains. It signals to shift the focus from the empty cups to the cups that are still holding the ground - which means to move on and rebuild based on the remaining assets rather than to mourn for what is lost.

Reversed Position: Reversed the card inability to move on in life as the subject perhaps holds on to the tragedies of the past and refuses to gear up to utilize the available resources to make a better future.

Minor Arcana – Five Coins

The Number five is associated with conflicts, challenges and the capacity to adapt to the tides of time. The Five of Coins (Pentacles) is no exception.

It portrays a situation of adversity. The situation becomes clear with the very background that projects a night sky and the fact that it is snowing heavily. A destitute couple is seen to be walking through the snow. The man is crippled in the leg and requires the assistance of a crutch to walk.

The woman is seen to be trying to cover herself with a threadbare shawl. Both appear to be living through a difficult phase of life where material possession is near to nil. The couple walks in front of a beautiful stain glass church window which is brightly lit. The light seems to be shining through the five pentacles adorning the window. The church is a symbolic representation of spiritual knowledge and comfort that the church provides to people who are underprivileged.

Upright Position: This card is all about being deprived of material possessions. In this world when success is often measured in the parameters of wealth it also signifies a considerable blow to self esteem. It is a phase of loneliness and low spirits. It may also indicate problem in employment. However, the card also suggests that devoted partner would stand by in times of need.

Reversed Position: Reversed, the card may suggest spiritual vacancy in the mind of the seeker. Traditionally the reversed interpretation of the card suggests confusion and discord. It even indicates that near ones may not remain faithful over a fight relating to material possessions.

Tarot Cards (Major Arcana) – Emperor

The Emperor is the complimentary card to the Empress. He represents the Patriarch, or, in other words, all things Masculine. His ruling Planet is Mars as depicted by the four rams heads that decorate his throne; and the element associated with him is Fire. The Emperor personifies Power and Authority.

His stern demeanor is a stark contrast to the sensitive features of the Empress. The Emperor is depicted as a man with long white beard signifying his wisdom and experience that he has accumulated over the years. This means that he is someone whose advice is worth adhering to. The mountains behind his throne speak of intellectual heights, leadership and action.

The orange background and the red attire symbolize the passion and energy which makes up his proactive nature and helps him deal with life and its challenges. The right hand of Emperor holds an Ankh which
symbolizes life according to ancient Egyptian tradition, while the orb in his left hand represents the world over which the Emperor rules.

Upright Position

In a reading the Emperor may suggest achievement and honor. It also signifies a male influence - a person who has a strong position in the life of the seeker - it may be her/his father, male partner or even superior at work. The card says that this male authoritative figure will stand by you in times of need. It also says that
you shall be blessed with authority and leadership qualities.

Reversed Position

In a reverse position this card signifies abuse of power. It says that the person concerned has lack of character leading to failed ambitions and insecurity.

Minor Arcana – Eight Swords

The Eight of Swords card portrays a woman who has been made blindfolded and has been tied up. The woman stands on a watery barren land. She has been isolated from company. A town can be seen at a distance, but the woman does not seem to have any clue about it for she cannot see what is around her. The woman’s feet do not come in contact with the water which indicates that the woman assesses the situation from an intellectual viewpoint, but not an emotional one. There are eight swords around the woman that seem to encircle her in a kind of enclosure. However, the path in front of her seems to be clear and open. But the woman is unaware of this route to escape. It indicates that although there is a way of getting away from the difficult situation the closed vision hampers the woman from doing so. The grey and cloudy sky forms a backdrop that also speaks of despair and disdain.

Upright Position: The card exudes a general idea of being trapped. However, the bondage is due to one’s own thoughts and perspectives. There is perhaps a fear of insecurity, but that is probably self imposed. The person’s mind is so clouded with worries that she/he does not seem to reach out to the way out if the troublesome situation. Traditionally the card may represent misjudgment, accident, conflict, illness or some crisis.

Reversed Position: Reversed, the card does not imply a totally opposite situation. However, some success may be achieved through persistence and creativity. It may also indicate overcoming some past misfortune or breaking free from some problems.

The Eight of Cups card evokes a sense of grim and solitude. Just a glance at the card brings about an immediate reaction of sadness. Even the background is of nighttime - darkness. The moon in the sky also looks grave and somber. The card portrays a young man who has turned his back towards the worldly pleasures. The neatly arranged cups to his back represent all his accomplishments. He chooses to walk towards the hilly terrain by the darkness of nighttime - he embraces difficulties leaving behind all that is familiar to him. He is wearing a cloak and carries a stick in his hands. With only these he has embarked upon the journey, meaning that he has shunned the comforts of life.
