Tarot Cards (Major Arcana) – Devil

The governing zodiac of this card is Capricorn. Also, the number 15, according to the principles of numerology, equals to number 6. The 6th card of Tarot is the Lovers » in this card the lovers are seen chained » they are enslaved by the materialistic world and by sensual pleasures.

The card portrays a half human half goat Satyr dancing to the music of the pipe. He holds the pipe in his left hand. In many mythological stories, the goat is considered to be unclean and lustful.

Also, by goat what is conveyed is the concept of scapegoat. This rightly brings out a side of human nature that prefers to put the blame of evil whenever they commit something that is wrong or unacceptable.

The darkness relates to the depth of unconscious where the Devil dwells. The chain in the right hand of the Devil is attached to the collars hung around the necks of the lovers, represented by naked human figure, one man, and the other woman. The hands of the lovers are free, but they do not attempt to free themselves from the bondage. This says that human subjugation to evil is mostly voluntary.

Upright Position:
In most cases the card is considered to be a negative one. It represents the extremes and the unrestrained. The Devil indicates subjugation to addiction, temptation and lust which generally bring upon not so desirable outcomes. The Devil is actually a warning of the result of mindless action. In relationship and marriage the card is believed to have some positive significance.

Reversed Position:
Reversed, this card indicates liberty from negative influences and creating something positive and constructive.

Tarot Cards (Major Arcana) – Death

The Death card is ruled by Scorpio » a sign that is typically associated with death, sex and taxes. The number of this card is 13, which is considered a sacred number by the Goddesses as there are thirteen moons in a year.

The card depicts Death to be riding on a white horse with a black and white flag in hand. Death here has been symbolized by a skeletal figure wearing armor that adds to his invincibility for death is something no one can conquer.

The white horse is a symbol of purity since death is the ultimate purifier. After death, everything is reborn pure and fresh. Every cross section of human population – men, women and children » are depicted in the card that is a clear indication that Death never discriminates according to age, race or gender. This impartiality is also depicted by the grey background of the card.

The black flag represents darkness, while the white motif on it is again symbolic to beauty, purity and immortality. The immortality factor is also stressed by the rising sun in the background for the sun sets each evening only to renew the hope of a fresh sunrise every morning.

The two pillars guarding the gateway to the sun symbolize ultimate knowledge. The boat helps souls ferry across River Styx that flows to demarcate Earth and the Underworld.

Upright Position: In a reading this card does not necessarily mean death literally. It means new beginnings which can happen only after a chapter is closed.

Reversed Position: In reverse, the card indicates stagnancy which is deterrent to the regular flow of life.

Tarot Cards (Major Arcana) – Chariot

The Chariot is ruled by the zodiac Cancer and is associated with the element Water. There is a Celestial influence at work in this tarot card. The Charioteer is a man who sits inside a canopy of six pointed stars. The Crescent Moons, one on each shoulder of the man, have an outward curve that refers to the formative stage of the world.

The alchemic symbols on his tunic represent the spiritual transformation of human mind. The square represents the Earth which implies the strength of will power. This is also
reinforced by the fact that the Charioteer holds no reigns, but just a wand indicating authority and power. The laurel and star crown glorify the highest attainment that a
man can achieve in his spiritual journey.

The wings of the Chariot are suggestive of inspiration, while the black and white Sphinxes represent the balance of the positive and the negative. The city behind the Charioteer means that he has been able to turn his back towards materialism as he makes his journey to seek spiritual knowledge.

Upright Position

The Chariot symbolizes triumph - end of all conflicts resulting in victory. If the subject has been struggling with any situation in life, then she/he will
emerge a winner. This card reinstates your belief in your own capabilities. It also suggests sudden good news. Travel and changes are also indicated.
A chariot, meaning a vehicle, can also imply a new car for the seeker.

Reversed Position

Conversely, this card indicates lack of self control and arrogance. It can also be an indication of stress related illness. Travel plans may not go as desired.
Some readers even predict accident.

Minor Arcana – Ace of Batons

The Ace of Wands card has a lovely azure blue background as the sky and lush greenery in the landscape. At a distance a castle is shown to the left - the castle represents all the opportunities and the promises thereof.

The main feature of the card is a hand that seems to be reaching out of the cloud to grasp a wand. The wand is still flowering - symbolizing growth and development.

The hand reaching out of the cloud or sky (heaven) is a representation of a spiritual opportunity or offer that is being made. The leaves that float down with the wind speak of the balance between material achievements and spiritual gains.

Upright Position: In a reading, this card is an indication of opportunities to make new beginnings. This is mostly all about action. The subject is charged up about some new ideas and cannot wait to put them to work. The Ace also represents a nascent stage. It is all about potentials that creativity has to turn the moment into a special one. The card may also signify a birth in the family.

Reversed Position: Reversed, the card speaks about cancellations of plans and postponement of schedules. It may suggest a lack of clear direction when the subject is unclear of what she/he wants out of life. It can be frustrating for any person. It may also indicate that the person is so bogged down with the present responsibilities that she/he finds it difficult to let fresh ideas creep in.

The Ace of Swords card is portrayed by a single glowing white hand that appears from a wisp of dark clouds from the left of the card. The hand holds a long double edged sword.

The background of the card is light grey with rocky terrains or mountains visible at a distance. That the hand holds the sword firmly is demonstrated by the white ray of lights exuding from the hand. The sword points upwards. Near the tip of the sword is a crown made of gold. On one side of the crown laurel leaves hang while on the other side are palm frond.

Upright Position: The Aces in general are about new beginnings. The Ace of Swords is probably an indication that a situation is about to begin that is double edged just like the Sword in the card. Only a sharp mind with intellect can emerge from such a situation. The card indicates focus and a burst of energy. Even if uncertainties exist, the sword would be able to cut through it. In a reading the card is considered to be a good omen to make new beginnings. Overall, the card is all about judicious and fair decisions, ambition and determination to execute.

Reversed Position: Reversed, the card would warn the seeker to postpone any new beginning – it may be a new project at work or a new relationship at the personal level. It may even indicate a lack of focus and ambition. The subject has probably reached a point where the mind is devoid of ideas.

The hand comes out from the clouds signifying spiritual energy and represents the influence of the subconscious. Rays radiate from the hand – it means that one should always trust one’s gut feelings and let intuition lead to the right path. It asks people to connect to their innermost feelings. Minor Arcana – Ace of Coins

The Ace of Coins (Pentacles) shows a hand coming out from the clouds. The hands nestles in it a golden coin or pentacle. The background is of azure sky above and lush greenery below. The flowering garden full of blooms with a flowing creek and mountains at a distance all conjure up a picture of a harmonious environment. The blossoms also represent prosperity, growth and material richness.

Upright Position: This card is all about sowing seeds of success. It talks about new beginnings and fresh inspiration. Although Pentacles are generally related to the material world, here the hand coming out of the cloud also links the card to the spiritual aspect. Sometimes this card in a reading is suggestive of a new job or a promotion. It may also indicate a sudden inflow of money by means of gift or inheritance. However, it should also be borne in mind that these seeds of possibilities need to be nurtured for them to be fruitful. The seeker needs to be alert enough to recognize a opportunity that comes her/his way.

Reversed Position: Reversed, this card brings the news of missed opportunities. It may happen that what is anticipated does not happen. It may also indicate greed and corruption. The card when reversed warns that it is probably not the right time to start any kind of new venture – be it professional (new business, new project) or personal (new relationship) or financial (new investment, new property). The seeker should take this as a lesson to take a more practical approach towards life and work methodically and diligently to accomplish what the heart desires.

Tarot Card Decks

There are thousands of different tarot decks available. Each has unique features. Most are brilliantly artistic.
Some are more artistic than functional - the ones that are considered novelty. They may be breathtaking in their
beauty and full of whimsical fun, but they are rarely used for prediction purposes. For tarot readings, there are a
few decks that are more in use than others due to the ease of predictability and simplicity in functioning.
Some of the popular Tarot decks have been discussed below.

  • Deviant Moon Tarot
  • This deck features dark, surreal, very unique yet sinister creatures that can sometimes even be disturbing to the onlooker.
It includes pictures of cemeteries and mental asylums and is believed to dig deep in the subconscious of the human mind.
It is full of dark humor and presents to the point reading without any sugar coating. This deck takes a deviation from the
traditional forms in more ways than one, but never fails to convey a clear meaning.

  • Rider - Waite Tarot
  • This deck is often considered as the first modern and organized approach to present tarot cards
and is still the most influential Tarot Deck that is widely used and highly recommended by both
beginners and professionals. This deck came up with the first pictorial representation of the Minor Arcana cards.
The seemingly simple illustrations by Pamela Coleman Smith have timeless appeal and many decks owe their symbolic
meanings to the ones depicted in these cards.

  • Morgan - Greer Tarot

add a vintage appeal to the set, these cards surely will rivet attention to the reading table. This
deck is also one of the staples recommended and used by users, both novice and experienced. It
basically follows the Rider-Waite principles but with a more immediate approach. The colors used
have a symbolic significance and stirs deep emotions in onlookers.

  • Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot
  • This version is recommended to be used by users with some prior experience in tarot reading.
The salient point of this deck is that it contains 80 cards instead of 78 as in the regular ones
for it includes three different versions of the Magus card. This deck is often referred to as a
controversial one with dark interpretations, but this is perhaps mostly due to the reputation
of its creator. Each card is loaded with symbolism and can convey deeper meanings than their simpler counterparts.

  • DruidCraft Tarot

present a backdrop where spiritualities of Wicca and Druidry confluence. The cards are

an everyday act. This inviting deck was created by Druids Philip, Stephanie Carr-Gomm and
    artist Will Worthington.

believe in magic and dare to fantasize. The deck beautifully depicts a story linking the origin of Tarot
to an ancient race that is extinct at present but left for the survivors the images and messages of tarot
as legacy with its wisdom. These help readers to delve in the past and come up with answers of the future.

  • The Sacred Circle Tarot
  • Inspired by the Pagan heritage of Britain and Ireland this deck is full of symbolic imagery based on the
suggestions of R. J. Stewart. Sharing its origin with the bards of the Celtic Culture, it helps in understanding
of both Pagan and Tarot history and principles. The illustrations are a combination of photographs, pencil sketches
and digital technology that makes them come alive. The cards also depict the landscapes and sacred sites of the above mentioned areas.

  • Crystal Visions Tarot
  • This beautiful deck deserves special mention especially for the unique artwork that is full of symbolism.

wanted to come up with a deck that has its own salient features, but is not too deviated from the traditional line of thought.
